Ferrofluid Display

This project explores the use of ferrofluid as new matter for creating an interactive display. I experimented with ferrofluid to learn more about its behavior and potentials for future designs. The idea for this design was to create a visualization of planetary data through ferrofluid displays. The emerging patterns also resemble alien landscapes of outer space.

Design Process

 

Ferrofluid Behavior Study:

To understand the right mixture, I experimented with different alcohol percentages ( 30,50,70 and90), and water. I found that the mixture of alcohol, water and ferrofluid is the optimum choice for this project.

Implementation

 

Mechanism

The movements are created by the designed magnetic mechanism embedded under the display surface. The operating mechanism also consists of stepper motors and Arduinos.

 
 
 
 

Patterns

Each module consists of a mixture of ferrofluid and paint, producing vibrant patterns and mesmerizing aesthetics.
