This studio project was designed through a team effort which aimed for a participation in the Urban Habitat 2015-16, Timber in the city Competition. The competition program included a mid-rise, mixed-use complex with affordable housing units, a NYC outpost of the Andy Warhol Museum and a new and expanded home for the historic Essex Street Market.

Design Process

Concept:

The main concept aims to reflect Andy Warhol’s approach, not just in his art work but rather in his personal life. The idea tries to capture the normality and the common, in a frame of repetition. Warhol believed that his art work was just a copy of original goods which have been presented differently.

The project site is in Manhattan’s lower east side in the former Seward Park Urban Redevelopment Area.

Street Market

The street market is designed to have access from all the surroundong streets. The internal composition is around a central linear hallway with shops either side. The characteristic of the street market is a combination of open temporary and permanent stales to provide the most flexibility and efficiency.

 Museum

The conceptual idea behind the museum tries to catch the spirit of Andy Warhol’s work through the originality of the geometric form. The cubic envelope is created through layers of material and structure with 40 by 40 meters in dimention. The size and structural componants resemble Warhol’s famous 40 by 40 cm canvas size and his layering technique.

The interior consists of 4 suspended stories which are made from CLT panels and a innovative Node and Rod stucture.
